Organizational Mycology
I'm a research consultant and social scientist. I help technologists, designers and scientists gather and use human-centered data. I support folks who are trying out their mixed methods or qualitative skills and want coaching and partnership in conducting and analyzing their research. I give talks and run workshops on a variety of topics such as qualitative research skills biomimetic organizations, and running online workshops.
I am the Founder and Co-Director of Open Post Academics (formerly the Athenas), an online peer-support community for people with a Ph.D. who have left or are considering leaving academia.
I spent a year doing research as an embedded ethnographer at the U.S. Green Building Council while they created the LEED v4 Green Building Standard. I wanted to understand how a mission-driven organization changed the market with a voluntary standard.
I have taught college courses at Portland State University, Bucknell University, the University of Arizona and Jesuit Worldwide Learning through Regis University. I was an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Department of Energy. I led the inaugural Bucknell in D.C. program on Energy and the Environment and was a founding member of the Sustainability Working Group.
I have a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Earlham College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Arizona.
I'm a storyteller and a writer. I've told stories on stage with the Portland Story Theater, Nerd Nite, Perfect Liars Club and Mystery Box. My literary writing has been published in Narratively, The Dandelion Review, VoiceCatchers and Stoneboat Literary Journal where I was honored to be nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
I live in Portland, Oregon and in my free time I enjoy travel (when not in a pandemic), gardening, aerial arts and fiber arts such as spinning yarn, knitting. I volunteer with The Dougy Center for grieving children and families, with the Mozilla Foundation as a 2022 MozFest Wrangler and with Open Life Sciences as a Mentor.
